I am building a site for a photographer friend. Is there a correct way to choose what keywords I use? Is there an incorrect way that works best with the search engines? Thanks. 3's

the best place to start is using the Overture Keyword tool that will give you some idea on whats being searched for

I have also found [wordtracker.com...] to be useful.

Use your weblogs if you have access to them, you can see what keywords are most popular as well as what search engines are getting you the most traffic.

I would look at my content and try to categorise the content. i.e. photos of trains, photographs of racing cars, fotos of castles, pics of Spain, etc. Then sort them around a bit, using the above mentioned tools to find variables that 'match the stuff in the pages'.

Is there a way to determine number of keyword competitors for free?

One way I've found to prompt ideas for keywords is to look at other sites on the topic and check out their keyword density. The keyword density analyser at [searchengineworld.com...] ranks the keywords in a page of your choice by their density on the page.

It works as a quick way to see what keywords your competitors are optimised well for.

Someone else mentioned this in a similar thread and it's a good suggestion:

Browse the photography books and magazines on the racks at your local bookseller (or Amazon, using their new enhanced text search capability).

Check out analogx.com for useful keyword and maillist tools. they're free and they work well. Work very well in determining which keywords aree popular on certain engines and you can look at the meta structure of top ranked sites in your category.
