All my competitors have got in professional web design companies, and all use directories which contain the keywords. i.e /stag_night_nights/ and then use a index page of that directory. I know it's not good to have deep directories, but all these are off the main page, so only one deep.

Are there advantages to be had by doing this?

Hello Aberdeen,

I tend to keep all webpages in the root directory. If it is a large website and needs sub directories for organizational purposes, I do use keywords in the directory names.

However, I don't believe the weight put on keywords in the directory names outweigh having webpages located in the root directory.

I could be wrong, just speaking from experience. Hope this helps.

From an SEO perspective, there's probably no effect and if there is one then it's likely to be vanishingly small.

I agree, it's probably a small difference, if any. However organising your content into approp. directories can be useful e.g. easily monitor popularity of sections, circulate short, neat urls like www.somewhere.com/widgets etc.

I think you may want to avoid spammy directory names www.somewhere.com/widgets-for-sale-online which do not really inspire confidence. Keep 'em short and sweet - aim for a user centred design and your SEO should naturally follow. HTH.
