Web creation problems

I have volunteered to create a web site for a professional organization (I have very little web building experience). We have multiple chapters that would like to be able to post to their own subdirectory. My web hosting provider has upgraded my package to something that is supposed to handle this. Am I asking the impossible in having a "master" site, with other sub-sites published and maintained by others? It seems that it should be simple to create folders and assign users and permissions for each, but in practice it is not working out. Any comments or support would be appreciated.

I haven't used it but Macromedia Contribute might save you some heartache. Free 30-day trial. However, I would do a search here for "Macromedia Contribute" to see what the reviews on it are before diving in.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld. :)

You need a Content Management System or CMS. Macromedia Contribute might work for you, especially if you develop using their other applications like Dreamweaver...but there are hundreds if not thousands of CMS products available these days. Some offerings are standalone applications, others are hosted web services. Try a Google search for CMS and do some reading...Many people even build their own CMS if the need is very specific to an organizations processes.

Thanks for the responses. I should have provided a bit more background - I am not a web designer, but "inherited" the position of webmaster when we could not find anyone else that would do it. What we needed was a basic site to distribute information; some of the contributers have more web experience, and some of them (me) have very little.

Macromedia Contribute looks like it might be a solution, but too expensive. We anticipate 16 to 20 people to be creating and maintaining their own section of the site. The reason for this was to save money by allowing smaller chapters to use a regional site (all non-profit). This savings would be eaten up by software costs. At least I now know what the service I need is called. I'll talk again to my ISP to see if we can't solve the problem, since they originally told us we could do what we wanted with their service.
