I want to get my site higher in rank?

any ideas besides meta tags and pay per click

I have had no luck with my site my site has been on the web since 1999 and i tried and tried to get a higher rank i changed the site the meta tags did not use so many links and i'm not in it for the money i just want the hits i want my web host to call me up and say chris you broke our server but since 1999 till now maybe this is just a estimate 1,200 people seen my site i need help to make the site more active any ideas i would put the url but i don't want people to get mad and think i'm tring to spam thanks for the help

Not sure how many posts you have read about marketing and promoting your website, equally what you have actually done to achieve results.

The very basics after you are sure that your site is oven ready i.e links working, body copy keyword weighted, title and description good etc; go for submission, first option would be Dmoz, then Google etc.

You will find all the above described in full depth throught many threads, iy's worth taking time out to read them.

I did all that over and over my rank is bad i tried a new look to the site new keywords new host new description new title checked the links all good submitted the site to Dmoz google yahoo msn aol dogpile and the list goes on i did not use a web submit software i went to each site to submit the list is huge i do this every 6 to 8 months because i know that the spiders will come out to play and find my site but the rank is low i'm not even the top 50 more like the top million i don't want to do the pay per click thing because i'm not to secure with doing it yet because how do i know if the click was real or it's some kid hitting the refresh button thanks for the help

If punctuation and grammar was one of the important issues in SEO, there are a few sites that wouldn't see the light of day!

I think that by far the most important thing I have learned is to make the site easy to follow, make the text content short and to the point, and have links TO your site.

One of my sites has given me fits, submitting to spiders and directories like you have done. And all of a sudden I traded links with people and the spiders show up and my rank REALLY improved. Not only that, but I have found that it is more important to trade links with sites that are in your same category.

Do a search for "link exchange" and throw in your top keyword. Chances are there is someone out there willing to trade with you. There may even be a few free link exchange directories for the things you want to be listed under.

Then once you get incoming links, submit THOSE pages to the spiders and directories.

Important question too. What is the subject matter of your site? If its the same as a trillion other websites you have a harder road! If its a unique niche area, its much easier.
