I have good traffics from Google and Yahoo, yet little or no traffic from Altavista. The site has been up for a little more than 7 months. How do I get traffic from Altavista or another other SEs out there?

Most sites will have more traffic coming from Google and Yahoo than from AltaVista. AltaVista is not as popular as it was a few years ago.

First of all, check if your site is already indexed by AltaVista or the other SEs your thinking of. If not, look for "add URL" or so. Getting into ODP is a good start to become indexed in several SEs. It is not a must (a site can be indexed in SEs without a link from ODP) but it can help. Having more inbound links will help anyway.

Please have a look at Search Engine Relationship Chart [webmasterworld.com] to find out more about the other SEs.

AltaVista is pretty negligible (oops, I work with them, maybe I shouldn't say that?) but if you really want more SE exposure, I'd recommend looking into smaller SEs and directories that are specific to the product you're putting out. You won't necessarily get a ton of traffic from them, but this will improve your ranking on those search engines.

After Google, I recommend focusing on the Inktomi index which isn't hard to get high rankings in if you know your SEO. MSN isn't winning the SE wars by any account, but they still do get a sizeable amount of traffic and it would be worth it. AltaVista is at the bottom of the feeding chain nowadays, though that may change since their acquisition by Overture.
