Help!

Please somebody help with this problem

I am developing click-on tabs for my website and I am using
24-bit Bitmap (*.bmp,*dib) istead of Gif, or JPEG.

Question: 1) Is it acceptable to use bitmap for website designing. As PAINT is the only one on my windows XP, I have to develop an image - hyper-refence tags.

Questiobn: 2) Is there is good Paint on the internet which will allow me to convert Bmp to Gif without loosing any pixel image.

Question: 3) What attribute size is a good size for press-on tabs - width and height that will not loose print image quality.

Flolondon. Thanks.

hi flo

1) its not recommended to use bmp images for websites - some browsers will display them but im not sure if they all
will and the file size is often a lot bigger than gif or jpeg.
the version of paint on my pc offers the option to save as gif or jpeg but doesnt offer the chance to to vary the quality to filesize ratio.

2) there are a number of tools to compress images online - im not sure if theyll work with bmp's but if you can save as jpeg or gif as described above you could then use an online tool to compress to an acceptable filesize. use you favourite search engine to look for 'online image compression' or similar.

3)images should be at 72 dots per inch for on screen diplay

Thanks ben for that message.

It seems my time using bmp has been wasted and now I have to either find a image compressor on the net or start all over again with a different package so that I can save it in gif or jpeg.

Another question, I would like to ask is Are website designers allowed to use Images from Google.com for their webpages; is that officially accepted.

you dont nessacariliy have to start over:

open the images back up in paint and try going to
file > save as

and select from the drop down box to see if there is gif or jpg.

:)

I guess you mean results from the image search in google?
Most things belong to someone and as such your your probably not allowed to use them. If its just for your personal homesite you might be ok but I wouldnt want to say either way. The best thing to do would be to ask the owner of a particular image if you can use it. There are some free or cheap ways to get images that are ok for both personal and in some cases commercial work.
Ill stickymail a link as im not supposed to post them here.

Ok thanks

But when I try to save it in Gif or Jpeg- the quality is reduced significantly; it looks all powdery and has a horrible interface.

ideally you need some image editing software.
A lot of people use photoshop/imageready which is very powerfull but also very expensive. Another option would be PaintShopPro which is quite powerful and a bargain at about £100. Its also available as a free 30 day trial I think, which may help with this particular project. Its made by Jasc (?) - check their website for details.
