Difference between a Hit and a Visit

I'm new to this world and want to know the difference between a Hit and a visit on my monthly statistics.

Visits try to express how many real people visited your website. One visit may consist of many consecutive page views which may consist of many hits if the page viewed referenced images of framed pages. Due to proxy servers, load balancing, etc. a visit is quite hard to determine.
