Hi. Put up my first site about a month ago, health-related. Planning on monetization with adsense and affiliate programs. I'm a nigerian doctor, wife and mother of two.

1) A lot of the posts seem to be from people in developed countries who are having success with their sites. Is there anyone out there from a third world country who is making money with their website? Sometimes I think I'm nuts doing this, get palpitations just thinking about it, other times I feel dead sure I'm going to succeed. Would be nice to hear from anyone in a similar position.

2)Am working on getting inbound links by submitting articles and my site to directories so things are really slow right now. Have been indexed by several search engines. How do I get them to visit my inner pages?

3)Thanks to everyone at webmaster world. I can safely say I wouldn't have gotten this far without y'all.

Welcome to WW .

Of course there are many webmasters from the Third world making decent money. Actually the dollar still goes a long way for us and so even a small amount of dollars is a big incentive.

You are lucky to find this forum so quickly. We are sure you will get excellent tips and advice here, which will go a long way.

Do explore the library threads to gain information which is priceless.

Hi naija_doc, welcome to WebmasterWorld :)

Being from a developing country really doesn't matter very much on the web. I like to think of the web as a place with no boundaries. If person "A" in a fully developed country can do it then so can person "B" from a developing country. It's all about having ideas and more importantly having the initiative to try it.

Being a Doctor and running a health site is very good. You obviously know your industry very well and you will be able to ensure your site has good quality original content. There are many sites within the health sector that have been built by people with little or no experience within the field. Your site has the ability to stand above these sites.

The important ingredient that you need to add now is time. Getting good traffic does not happen over night, it all takes time. When ever I start a new site I am aiming at a time span of 6 months from launch to receiving good traffic. In all probability it can take even longer then this.

Right now you should concentrate on getting as many high quality inbound links as possible and get as much good content on the site as possible. If you make your site stand above the rest of the sites in your industry then you could do very nicely from it.

Good luck.

Mack.

Welcome naija_doc,

Sometimes I think I'm nuts doing this, get palpitations just thinking about it, other times I feel dead sure I'm going to succeed.

You’re not alone with this. I had the same feelings when I first started—thinking maybe it was just a crazy waste of time. Even in developed countries some people simple don’t believe it’s possible to earn an income with a Web site. They think it’s just some scam or that Web site owners are “just playing on the Internet.” With so many unbelievers and pessimists, it’s hard to believe the success stories.

It really is possible, though. I live in a semi-developed country and even here the AdSense income from my first site (a mediocre site created when I was a confused newbie) is enough to pay the bills. The others are right when they say it can take months to see any income. That’s why it’s important to choose a topic you enjoy, so it’s easier to stay with it. A health site by a doctor sounds like a great idea.

I know in some countries there can be problems with receiving or cashing payment checks or receiving direct deposits to bank accounts, but people do seem to find ways around these problems. Since no one has suggested Brett Tabke’s “A Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone” at [webmasterworld.com ], I’ll suggest it. It’s a favorite on this forum and has helped a lot of people.

Best of luck with your site!

Z

feeling alone out there in the cyber marketing world is a feeling known all too well. with a quality site, real information, and value to the user, no one knows or should care where the webmaster is located. when i lived in mexico, i saw many people struggle with the local infrastructure (isp, hosting costs, etc), but the spirit and adventure of it all was very inspiring. best of luck.

Thank you for all the responses to my message. Nice to have somewhere to come where you don't feel like you're speaking a language that no-one else understands.

You're right about the constraints. I connect to the internet at a cybercafe cos I don't have a connection at home,(horribly expensive!) which is why I can't post as regularly as i would like. Will get a connection as soon as I make some money from my site :-).

I've learnt so much here. I actually found WW last year but everything looked like greek( no offense intended) to me then so i thought there had to be an easier way. There isn't!(My sister was trying to get me to learn html but looked too much like hard work.) Now i'm feeling more at home.

Have discovered dreamweaver from advice and encouragement i got here(was very intimidating at first) and given up front page(difficult to publish from a cybercafe). Am now learning how to use css style sheets and it's been a real revalation.

The thing is that you have to wear so many hats and there's so much to learn. It never gets boring. Thank you all so much.

I agree with someone who wrote about starting your adsense bussiness with blogs that no-one can tell you everything. You just have to jump in and learn from your mistakes (made plenty of those!). Just have to be careful about information over-load and take things one step at a time. Light bulbs come on as do what you learn.

I've been on the web, and "amateur" publishing some personal sites for years. Recently, I completed a programming degree, and have been professionally involved for about half a year. One of the big eye-openers I've had is that the internet is like "real estate" in a legitimate sense. A web presence IS a real property that people from all over will see. The net takes away the boundaries from where you are, in terms of doing business. It all boils down to the <information> you are providing, how you promote it, and how search engine optimized your site is. You might also want to look into Google Analytics, which is free. You place a small code at the bottom of your pages, and in return you get very detailed reports and can watch, and "tweak" your site's pages as it goes. The one main strong point that engines look for is good content. I think that you'll do fine. Don't worry about location. Your location, IS the website, not where you live. Good luck!

Hi again. Incidentally, i have read the successful site in 12 months with google thread, Zisel. Have it printed out for easy and quick reference. I've been so encouraged by the responses, thanks mack and everyone else. Didn't think anyone would respond to this post because this " can i make any money with this" is quite a common theme on WW from what i've seen, and has probably been talked to death so to speak. Just that it feels more personal when people are actually responding to your own message. Will keep plugging away. Thanks.
