I'm starting a website for me and my buddies to upload our personal home movies, however dumb they might be, and I don't know exactly how to do it. I have seen sites like YouTube where people can log in, create a profile and upload their videos. I would like to do something like this with my site but don't know how. I'm a one man band and I'm a roockie to site building for sure but I have some coding background and can figure things out with the right guidence.
Are there any solutions that can 1) manage customer login to my site, 2) allow people to upload videos to the site, 3) allow for users to play videos and 4) make the videos secure so others can download them off the site.
I would like to figure out a good solution for playing videos from my site in a YouTube type of way.
Any advice is good advice and I'm sure that there are several peices to this puzzle that I have to figure out but I would like to try - one at a time.

I would go the route of checking the major script archives. There are several off-the-shelf scripts that will do what you are asking. Some of the commercial ones even allow catagories.
I hope you are aware that video files are normally big.
Have you considered CMS like Joomla or Mambo? If I am not mistaken they have a video uploading component.
You need to search for video upload components on sites like hotscript.com. you will get huge variety of scripts for your purpose. I'm not sure about joomla as well.
Alternatively If you are planning to offer live video record feature then you can build a flash based video recorder that will record video from user's webcam. We recently developed this system for a US based video community website that is based on flash server but since flash server hosting is very costly, this approach may not suit your budget.
