I have a domain hosted in one place - abcd.com
and I have a sub domain set up sub.abcd.com

I then have another hosting account at sub.1234.com

Now I would like to keep abcd.com exactly as it is except I would like sub.abcd.com to point to sub.1234.com while still showing sub.abcd.com

The company looking after my abcd domain name is seperate to the hosting and allows access to a dns control panel. This means I can add A records for it.

I tested it by redirecting sub.abcd.com to the ip of a well known search engine and it worked correctly. The difference is that sub.1234.com is shared hosting and has no specific ip.

So can I add a record for abcd.com that will redirect all traffic to sub.abcd.com to sub.1234.com without showing the user the sub.1234.com address?

I assume it can be done with the dns settings but is there another way if this doesn't work.

Thank you.

If the shared host is using virtual hosts (I imagine it will be) then the IP factor should not matter. Virtual hosting allows a server to host a lot of domains on one single IP address. A sub domain would be set up just like a normal domain.

At your domain registrar point the dns for the sub domain you wish to move to it's new server. then at that host, add the domain dns to your account. How you do this will depend greatly in the control panel provided but once added your sub should go live.

thanks mack you were correct.

Get the domain added to the other server (even though your only directing one subdomain to it)
Get the subdomain added to it.
Point the sub domain to the other server using ip of the server.

Thank you.
