What's the process for submitting a website to a search engine? And is it going to cost me?

"Submitting" a site to search engines is now useless, despite the many companies willing to take your money to do it. It has not been necessary since the late 1990s. Note that the Search Engine Submission forum here at WebmasterWorld has been deprecated.

Search engines find your site by following links -- links on other sites that point to your site. These sites may be Web sites that feature related subjects, or directories that list sites like yours.

Look for quality sites on related subjects, and ask them to link to you. Submit your site to high-quality on-line directories like DMOZ.org and others that cover sites like yours. Note that some directories charge for a listing and some don't. Most good directories will not accept all sites that ask to be listed; They are looking for high-quality sites with useful information on them, and have their own reputations to protect.

See our Link Development [webmasterworld.com] forum for more information.
