The term 'portal' is used to describe a website that acts as an entry point or gateway to an array of services or resources.

Obviously all sites can do this to some degree, but typically a portal will have a wide range of resources, usually including a search facility, directory of other sites, news, e-mail etc. Portals can be general (eg Yahoo) or be specific to a particular industry, occupation or field of interest.

abbeyvet is correct, but some people may refer to a portal as a form of content management system for example PhpNuke.

A portal script is a piece of software that lets you run a "portal like" site without any real programming or development knowledge.

But in the most accurate context a portal is a site that acts as a gateway to online features and or services.

I run a couple sites using PHP-Nuke and I really like it. It's a little quirky with adsense but even someone who knew nothing about programming could maintain a Nuke site with fresh content very easily. Open source is the future if you ask me. Bill has already made enough money :-)
