Does it help to become an editor of directories like dmaoz etc.Can we be able to approve our own website if we become the editor of our own category.
Also how difficult is it to become an editor?
Thanks

Because of the way the ODP is operated, they are very keen to attract well suited people to each of their categories. Because you have a site that is based within this topic, the chances are you know a lot about it. This may well make you a great candidate as an ODP editor.

But you must also bear in mind that ODP editors are required to be fair when they edit the category. This may involve listing sites that are in competition with yourself.

If you are thinking about becoming an ODP editor for the sole purpose of getting your site listed then from the ODP's point of view you are going about it for the wrong reasons.

Becoming an ODP editor is a fairly straight forward process, although they can be quite strict with their selection. You should click on the apply link and fill in the forms from there.

Good luck.

Unfortunatelly yes, it would help.

You can buy a DMOZ editor position for less then $100. There was one sold for less then $50 I watched on eBay.

Like everything that is set out with good intentions there will always be those to set out to flaunt the system and use it to their advantage.

We should also bear in mind that there are a heck of a lot of hard working ODP editors. Credit where its due.

Lets be respectful people!

In theory it is easy to become a DMOZ editor, but in practice it depends on the luck of the draw as to the mood of the meta that reviews your application.

The other thing you need remember is that it may anyway be impossible for you to get the editorship of the category that you want to get your site into in the first place.

In other words for new editors they will only assign you a very small category, then from there you may need to work your way up through larger category groups to where you want your site to be.

Bear in mind that hundreds of others can edit "your" category. That is those directly all the way up the tree to metas. So merely by adding your site to "your" category, does not ensure that you will keep it there. Any of these more senior editors can remove your edits.

On balance, if your only aim is to get a site listed, my advice would be not to bother applying to be an editor, just submit the site, and forget about it - if they list it, then they list it

Being an ODP editor requires a certain mindset. You need to be someone who's comfortable with an organizational way of doing things, and who's willing to invest the time in learning that way of doing things.

Even in a noncommercial category, you may become annoyed by the number of spammy or just inappropriate submissions that you receive. (Many submitters are lazy or clueless, which means the editor has to figure out where the submission could go--unless he or she simply says "Screw it" and deletes the submission, which might be a reasonable thing to do but isn't encouraged by the ODP culture.)

Bottom line: Being a good or even an adequate ODP editor is harder and more time-consuming than you might think, and it requires patience, humility, and a "team player" mentality.

Well I've had the opposite experience. I've found it to be extremely hard to become an ODP editor. I've submitted 3 applications over the last 3 years and either have been rejected or never heard a squeek out of them. It's as hard to become an editor as it is getting a site listed.

I live in an area of the world where the ODP entries are pitifully inadequate. There are no editors here. I am knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject, I'm articulate, made a great case (at least the last time), provided some good examples (each time). It's a woeful state of affairs.

I just go on with my life now, oblivious of the ODP. They need me more than I need them (at least in the topic I'm interested in) :)
