We are currently looking at upgrading our site with more options for our existing users. We're thinking of adding a new part on our site where users can login, upload files to us and check status on their requests. There is a few more details to this.

It should be in php preferrably (can be asp as well)
Secure login required
MySql database.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there software available for this or should we start looking to hire someone and have them program this.

A portal/cms may be an ideal solution for you. You could have the script installed in a folder such as /members and leave the rest of the website un-touched. Then have a sign in page on your pages that will log users into the members area.

Common examples of a cms's are Mambo/Joomla, phpwebsite, PhpNuke there are many, many more. You could have a look through hotscripts.com for php content management systems.

The upload feature that you require is an optional component in a few of these systems.

Thank you for your answer Mack - I have looked at the portals that you mentioned. They are great scripts, but I think we should look into hiring someone and have this built from scratch (to be unique I guess). I wouldn't feel comfortable to have this running on our company's site knowing that the source code is available widely to public.

What would be a fair rate to expect for this kind of project, just to have ideas when interviewing possible candidates.

Thanks in advance.
