Reasons for getting penalised by a search engine.

Reasons why a site would be dumped...

No I suppose your right that it doesn't provide massive increases in income in the short term but does have advantages in that if the SE's dump you not every bit of income dissapears all at one go so you can keep going to fight another day without getting back on the corporate missery trail

Steve40 posted this in another thread, and I thought it was a good idea for a it's own thread.

Could someone please explain the reasons why a search engine might dump you, so I can try to avoid them? :)

Well, let's get this list started!

Your site may be banned if...

  • your site is a scrape of some other site, or a compilation of scrapes of many other sites.
  • your site uses "keyword stuffing", like "hiding" a cloud of keywords as white text on a white background.
  • your site uses an empty and pointless (to users) "gateway" page.
  • your in-links are all from spammy scammy link-farms.
  • you used one of those "We'll get you in thirty thousand search engines for only $49.95! Guaranteed!" automated submission "services".

Note: Some sites get banned for no reason anybody can suss. I know of a well-esteemed educational site that's been around for years and has tens of thousands of in-links (from universities and such). But the site was banned from Google some months ago, and nobody has been able to figure out why. So, no matter how long this thread's list may get, there will be some reason(s) that won't make it in. Just FYI....

Too bad that thread doesn't appear to cover what I mentioned. It might be nice to run with this thread, to see if we can get some up-to-date information on the topic.
