What Is LDAP?

I did not know ehere to post this... I need to edit a site that uses ldap to store usernames and passwords, is it some kind of database? Also Is their an LDAP client that does not require an install as I do not have admistration rights on the computer i need to work on.

LDAP is Lightweight Directory Access Protocol - you can access it via script if you know the rdn or dn information - ask the administrator.

I thought it was a very basic, built in database for unix?

LDAP is a protocol, not a database - more info:

Ok thanks for the info, I think I understand what it is now. But is still need a client/browser that does not require an install e.g. a single exe file
