Do search engines index free sites?

Do free websites get ranked by google and other engines the same as paid domains?

I had heard that google ignores free websites because if the content was important it would be on a "real" site. Also they come and go so are not stable.

The ones in google at present are older sites that were indexed before the change. However I can't find any informaiton on that issue anywhere.

I dunno if treated the same is a correct view or not, but a very tiny site I did a few months back for a nfp group that's hosted on such a freebie site does have some info now showing up in the serps.
