Can you make money giving away free stuff?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to go about creating a web site that earns money giving away free stuff and getting people to sign up for get paid to read emails, etc?

I realise that this is a competitive area to aim for. However, I think that people are likely to sign up for free things and I was wondering if there is a way of setting up a free stuff website that was less competitive.

Free newspapers have been monetising free info for decades by selling the advertising estate around the articles. It's simple and it works.
