What is "website speed booster"?

Do small websites need it

I am checking out hosting packages and some are offering a website speed booster. Since my website will not have much traffic (less than 500 page views), file size less than 30k, will i need it?

15 megabytes a day...

If you hand code your site (correctly on top of that) you should not worry.

Such tools are for extreme amatuers and even in those cases don't really offer any geniune benefit.

Actually, it depends on what it is they offer... If by "website speed booster" they mean that they "gzip" the pages before they are sent to the browser, I would definitely consider that useful --not so much because of the money you'd save on data traffic, but because of the improved user experience: your pages may load much quicker (assuming the 30K is text; there would be little or no gains if it's mainly graphics).

Thenagain, they may mean something different altogether...

Hey caran1:)

If you want your webpages to load faster, try CSS. It will speed up the loading process by cleaning up the code on your pages.

If they use HTTP compression (or gzip as Eltiti calls it), then yes, it is definitely worthwhile. Your pages will load much faster (minimum of twice as fast, often up to four times as fast)

This speed boost works on top of any other optimisations you might use (like CSS based design or whitespace removal). Be wary of how they implement it though (IE5.5 has problems with some types of files if they are compressed.

Get as many details as you can from the host and post it here if you want further advice.

thanks for the replies. the reseller could not provide more information, and it was very expensive (US$7/month for 20MB webspace),so i decided to try other options
