I have a client using phpbb 2.0 open-source forum software on their website. They'd like to either integrate this with a email list server, or invest in a standalone email list server.
I've never used a list server before, letalone install one and my knowledge of php is extrememly limited - I outsource any php work.
Can anyone please suggest a course of action? What things should I consider? What are the hosting/software requirements for a list server? Can anyone recommened a provider?
Someone is added to a 'list'. Then if they want to mail everyone on the list, instead of needing to CC in each individual email address, they just send a single email to the 'list' email address. The listserver then automatically forwards that email to ever member of the list.
Then if someone receives one of these broadcast emails, they just need to hit "reply" and their reply is broadcast to everyone on the list in turn. And so on.
Sounds pretty simple, but when there are desktop appliation s and server installs etc I'm not sure which to go for.
I'm investigating Gammadyne Mailer for another project (HTML email newsletters), and it also has capacity to work as a desktop list server, which is one option. Not sure if it's ideal though, since the computer runing it would need to be always on.
