I have a new site and I am trying to gain link popularity and search engine saturation. What is the best way to go about this? is this another situation where it takes time? Is there anyone that would look at my site and give me a few pointers? thanks

You are right in thinking it takes time. The most importaint factor you need to get working on it gaining as many inbound links as possible. Inbound links act like roads that search engines can follow to get you pages.
As your link count increases the search engines will start to give more value to your pages. I cant give you a time frame but it can, and very often does take some time.
