There are many different kinds of meta tags, and their values may differ from page to page. Since they describe the information in the page, they need to be included on the page itself (i.e. there is no automatic mechanism whereby they are imported or inherited across a directory or host).

It's fair to say that a lot of sites don't use meta tags on all pages any more. It used to be though of as essential because of the way search engines worked in the past. Now a lot of these tags have been somewhat depreciates as search engines have changed how they rank and evaluate pages.

Today the most importaint aspects of your page are the title tag and your page content.

However I still feel it is good practice to use the tags as they where desined. Search engine technology changes so fast that you are never quite sure what's round the corner.

If nothing else meta tags are a good remineder of what Kw or key phrase any page is targeting so they are good for that.

Search engines don't rely on meta tags any more. I have great rankings for multiple websites and I don't use meta tags at all.

The only possible advantage is that sometimes, some search engines will show your meta description tag as the description of your site in the search results. That way you get to decide how you want your site to be described, rather than the engine just picking an excerpt off your page. Though most engines will ignore your meta description most of the time anyway.
