Hi goldwings,

There are many industries that do very well. The question you have asked if far to broad to receive a one size fits all answer.

It's not a question of what works well on the web, it's more a question of what can you do on the web. You may want to look beyond a specific industry, and think more in terms of the type of site. A lot of people are doing very well building pure content sites. On the web content is king, and can lead to very nice traffic. Many people do very well using advertising within their content sites using ether affiliate programs or contextual advertising.

What I would recommend what you do is start off in an area you know well. Build a site on related to a hobby for example. Work on adding loads of good quality content to it. Work on getting good in-bound links to your site and eventually your traffic should start to increase. From there you can decide how to make some money through your site.

I think it is wrong to just think this industry make the most money and build a site in that industry. The big money areas are also the most competitive, and in effect this will make it harder for you to get your foot in the door, so to speak. If you build a site within around subject you are interested in then you can do very well. It is possible to use your knowledge and experience to build a very good site, sometimes sites that are built around a hobby end up being the top sites within their topic.
