how to open zip or .tar.gz file in cpanel in a

I wanted to know how can i extract the files of the zip or .tar.gz files in to a folder.

i place the zip file in some folder through ftp then how can i extract these online.
i am using cuteftp

I do it when I'm actually logged into cpanel - and it ungzips automatically - you don't have to use ftp.
