Hi,

I know this is probably basic stuff, but I was wondering what the advantages/benefits of a dedicated IP address over a shared one.

FWIW, I have a hosting plan on a shared server that allows me multiple sites.

Thanks

One issuse to take into account with a dedicated ip address is that only your actions can have a negative effect.

Lets imaghine you are on a server sharing an ip address with another site. The other site starts doing all sorts of thing and lands it's self in trouble with google because of their techniches.

Google may take action against the ip and this could effect your site.

If Google suddenly started to ban sites by IP then their engine would grind to a halt.

There are many 1000's if not 1,000,000's of sites using shared IP addresses with out any problem.

Another thought is that if Google did start to ban by IP all the cowboys would do is change the IP address - it's much easier than changing the domain which is what they have to do at the moment.

Google are surely going to do what is easier for them. If they think an ip address is being abused simply ban it.
