I'm starting up an html email newsletter (by subscription only)for a small local business. I've created an html newsletter, used server-based images with full / absolute addressing. It works just as expected as a webpage. And I can copy and paste it into Outlook Express and send it and everything LOOKS fine when it is received and read. BUT here's my problem. It would appear that Outlook Express chooses to attach the images to the message, rather than retrieving them when the message is viewed. This means my newsletter says it takes 30K in the inbox rather than a more manageable size that I would prefer. How do I deal with this? Am I doing something wrong in OE or do I have to use another tool? (I don't want to buy any software at this time, as the current list of subscribers is less than 100, and we're not sure how much this list will grow. If it gets sufficiently sucessful we can look at buying tools later if needed). Also, yes I've read all the posts from those who hate html email - no need to repeat them here :). Help would be much appreciated!

Rather than using OE (which I used to use for small mailings, which is what most of my mailings are) you might try GroupMail Free. It is free, will let you send plain text along with your HTML, will individually address messages (no "undisclosed recipient"), and using it could not be simpler - just click on your HTML file and it is automatically inserted.

It will easily import any .csv file into its own database.

Or you could try an Internet option like Internet Mail Manager - free for up to 200 mailings a month. Lacks a plain text option, but otherwise works pretty well.

Thanks Mardi_gras. I did a quick check with GroupMail Free and it worked slick as could be. I still need to play around a bit more, but it cut my email size down to a respectable 7K.
