Free Hosting - Who to use?

plus other free hosting questions.

I've just done a quick site for my friends villa in spain, I wan't to stick it up on one of the free hosting places i.e. Geocities, angelfire etc..

Some Qusetions

1. Which is the best in terms of size, fewest adds reliabilty etc..
2. How easy is it to a)put the site up in the first place b) edit the site once it's up
3. Is it possible to use SEO tactics on a site hosted like this?

any other factors I should be aware of?

If you don't use external javascript files, try mysitespace which doesn't have banner advertising and only requires a link.

there is also doteasy.com - free for basic and you pay for addons like FrontPage etc

Try using Velnet who supply free space with no adverts when you register your domain name with them.

The log files are basic and do not have full referer details but all else is good.

The only limitation is that you have to use their dialup connection to FTP at 0845 rate.

I have some budget sites there and all is as OK refarding S/E listings.

doteasy.com requires you to purchase your domain name from them. Or else to transfer it to them. It costs like $25 to register the domain per year. No cgi-bin or traffic tracking options.

But for a personal web site, doteasy.com is totally a fantastic option. You can have ftp access, a real dot com name that belongs to you, and free hosting for a year!

That's so cheap even a six year old can afford it!

I'm seeing some nice sites using the free hosting option on Brinkster. I've never used them myself but they appear reliable.

You could also look into Portland Communications. They give you a subdomain or you can use a regular domain name. You also get a fair amount of space (15MB storage, 100MB bandwidth), php, mysql, ssi, stats. No cgi though. They say there was too much spamming going on to police it all, so they took the option away from the free sites. They've also got email forwarding with aliases.

No ads, banners, or pop-anything-or-anywhere.

netfirms has free space, with or without domain name, with ads, and has cgi and ssi available with the free hosting. Do NOT take a domain name through them.

There's also paid hosting available with some hosts for under $25 a year (you get your domain name wherever you want - as cheap as $8.95) that has CGI, SSI, PHP, MySQL, mod_rewrite, the works.

There's unlimited space, fast sign-up, easy to get your pages uploaded, and edit your pages online.

It all goes with a pop-up banner unfortunately.
