Can you tell me if free websites get picked up by search engines. I am know of someone who offers some space with no advertising on it?

Yes, pages on free websites get indexed by search engines. But be careful using free websites. You get what you pay for, and as you won't pay for anything don't rely on free hosting if you want to build a serious site. Many free hosting companies do not allow commercial sites, mp3, movies or other bandwidth consumers. They can also decide to add ads without any warning.

If you are serious about web development but have a tight budget, look for cheap shared hosting. There are packages starting at $3 per month. You still get what you pay for, but you are sure there will not be any advertising.
