Hi,

I made my first site with a well known company's hosting and haven't been too thrilled with the service, etc. Does anyone know of a reputable site that OBJECTIVELY reviews hosting companies or can anyone throw out names of some that are good for newbies like myself.

thanks much,

:)

I don't think such a site exists, even though it would be useful. The nearest thing I can think of is Netcraft's monthly uptime statistics for major hosting companies, but that's only measuring one parameter.

The trouble with review sites (and the reason why at this site we can't discuss specific companies) is that you can never be sure of the information. If the content is produced by the site owner, their experience is forcibly limited (they can't easily test everywhere), and the site might be biased towards their advertizers. If the information comes from user reviews, those "reviews" often come from hosting company employees or affiliates. Same for any replies you get by sticky mail: you don't know if the person sending is the owner of the site recommended.

Perhaps the only recommendation I can give is to look down at the bottom of this page to find the link to the hosting company this site uses. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're the best or most appropriate for your needs, but it might help.

My experience is that it's trial and error and be sure you don't get into a long term contract. Also, don't sign up with a hosting company that includes the domain registration in with your hosting. In the 1990's I lost several good domains that way. The service was terrible and when I went to switch hosting companies the first company said they owned my domains and they would not let them transferred.

My advice would be to use your favourite search engine and search for "hosting reviews"

I am afraid, but the rules here state that we can't give you any specific recomendations. Asking for a hosting recomendation can always be an invitation to receive the wrong sort of advice. Different people want different things from a hosting company. In the case if hosting one size doesn't fit all.
