I am new to this site and from what I have seen it is fantastic. Thank you to those who take the time to respond to us newbies.

My question is as follows: Yesterday, I received an unsoliticted phone call from a company with an interesting proposal. For a significant amount of front money plus an ongoing monthly fee, they would guarantee my website top 3 listing on Yahoo, Google, AOL and MSN. It seems that their strategy involves continuous submission of my website to about 8500 minor engines and making it appear to the major engines that my site was generating tremendous traffic. It sounded a little hokey to me so I told the guy to take a hike. Was I being premature? Is this kind of thing legit?

Welcome to webmasterworld rwharris311

You did the right thing by telling them to take a hike

There is enough information within this forum for you to learn how to do all of what they are offering and to do it the correct way

8500 - I was not aware we had that many, might have 8490 link farms and FFA's which are in bad neighbourhood.

There are no guarantee's in this business. Paying for someone to submit your site to 8500 minor search engines is not going to deliver valuable traffic - it may help but there are other more important factors to consider. It's also unusual that someone would make those guarantees without knowing your business. Here's a story about a firm that guaranteed placement and was later sued for failing to deliver on their promises
[google.com...]

All that said, a good SEO firm can be priceless.

Thanks for the link to the legal case. Interestingly enough, the company mentioned in this case is the same one that was calling me. It's nice to know that my original instincts were on the money.

Thanks again, I am very much looking forward to having access to the resources on this site.
