Imaege links changed during upload of a .gif

Why would the links on a page change when you upload a graphic to a server?

Recently I added a graphic to my index page, and uploaded the index page to the server without uploading the new graphic to my /graphics/ directory. All images displayed perfectly, except of course for the missing graphic, (showing only a place marker) which I then uploaded.

Surprise! Now only the newly added graphic displaying OK; all the other graphics only displaying place markers. Somehow, all my "old" image links now suddenly referred to the root directory, in stead of to the /graphics/ directory, and I assume that uploading the "new" graphic to /graphics/ must have had something to do with this. I'm a worried person, because I have never realised that one's code can change spontaneously. Please explain to me what happened here, one moment the page was working fine, the next moment it was not, without being changed by me. PS. The "new" page validated OK with W3C.

It can't - so something else must have happened. Uploading an image will have absolutely no effect whatsoever on the HTML markup.

Did you try uploading the HTML file again to see if that corrected the error?

Encyclo, thanks for responding to my weird looking question. Yes. after re-uploading the page, with the image where it belongs, it worked fine. You are completely right of course, uploading an image can have no effect on the markup of another page; exactly what went wrong is going to remain a mystery since I never stored those images in the root or had a version of the page that referred to those images in the root directory. Thanks again.
