How offen do the search engines crawl the web for new sites. Or is it a never ending thing..

It never stops, and it's neverending. In the good ole' days, Google used to do one big update of it's index a month (built with the results of the months Googlebot crawl), but these days, the index is a constantly-evolving thing, punctuated by the occasional jarring seismic shift.

If you are looking for a timescale for having a new site indexed fully and performing well in the SERPs, it is difficult to give an exact figure. The most important thing is to concentrate on link development and content-building - both of which contribute greatly to getting well spidered and well-ranked.
