First, read the thread Mack posted. It's how many of us started.

There's a great newcomer thread available:
Newcomer's Guide [webmasterworld.com]
It's a thorough list of topics providing a good foundation for SEO.

If a topic area catches your interest, click on the Forum Library link near the top of each page. Many of the classic posts are found there and should offer a good start.

Then read and read and read. And ask questions.

Best of luck to you.

Mack, LisaB and BrakthePoet - aren't the links you are referring to OUTDATED? Most of these posts are from February 2002. I am new to SEO as well. How do I know which content to trust when reading posts from 2 years ago? Where can I find a more current version of this information?

Cheree, Brett's guide is timeless, the way to develop a site for longevity and growth. Algos change but the basics of doing a good site don't.

Keeping in mind that different elements carry a different amount of weight at different times, this is just a short check-list that's not complete but is an overview, and that'll tell you what elements to be looking at

Google Optimization Basics [webmasterworld.com]

It's really not much different for Yahoo or any other; Google is more about links and Yahoo has more emphasis for what's on the page. The factors used for optimization don't basically change over time - just the algos do, and that's what has to be kept up with by each individual.

The basics are still the basics.

It's only the Amazing Secret Tricks that change from season to season, and no sensible person will share those in a public forum anyway.
