Hey guys, I just found this site about a week or so ago. I'm in the process of designing my first web site. Most of the conversations that I've read thus far are over my head. But I do want to make my website as useful as possible.

My question is this - is there already a thread or place on here that walks you through the process of getting as many people to your site as possible? Obviously I have to register with the search engines, but I don't even know how to do that. I'm assuming that certain keywords are better than other. I guess I just don't even know where to start. If this is too basic for this website, is there another similar site to this one that is more tailored to beginners?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, bgrasso12! You're at just the right place - everything is here. If you're a beginner, then here in the New to Web Development forum you can ask even the most simple questions and you'll get help.

Try: [webmasterworld.com...]

That thread goes through the basics of what you need to do - a real condensed SEO bible. Also, you can check out the Library for each forum where the best threads are placed.

Hope that gets you started!

You're on the right track there. Design for your users, and you're much more likely to develop a quality site.

If you want quick traffic, you should expect to pay for it. (Pay per click/Offline advertising)

If you are in it for the "long term" the best thing to read is Brett's Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com]. Good luck and...

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, bgrasso12! :)

No, you should get a link from an existing website that is listed in google for a search phrase, then have them link to you, that's how you get into search engines, they follow links. Submitting is more or less a waste of time, though it won't hurt, I did it once many years ago, now I just add a link on a preexisting site to a new one when I make it and it's indexed in a week or two.

No harm in adding your site to ODP, of course.
I'd recommend a knowledge of html and css to help you with the nuts and bolts....

This place never ceases to amaze me, look around, it can be a steep learning curve, but definitely fun and worthwhile.

Simple is better. Keep that in mind. All my sites are so simple a child can figure it out in seconds.

Look at google. Simple is better.

Hi, I'm new here too and I don't know much about stuff either. I'm looking for tips on how to make a website rank high on search engines. Is it true that search engines don't pick up sites made in flash?

Don't hold your breath until your new site is in ODP. It takes a lot of months and luck to get in these days.
