I have a friend who has built a site up on one of these free sites using there templates, he likes his site content but so he can get rid of the adds he is now going to buy a name and some hosting, I am going to build him a site up but to save me spending time going though his pages copy and pasting his content and pictures is there another way to do this with some free software, I seem to remember reading something about it on webmsterworld, The site is not that big so it's no major problem if it cant be done just me looking for an easier option.

Regards Ian

If you have FrontPage or Dreamweaver those should be able to grab the entire sites and "download them" so you can work on them.

You can also search at your favorite search engine for an offline web browser.

I would think that any decent free ftp program would handle that sort of thing just fine - UNLESS the free host disallows such programs? I think some of them do.... though the free part of netfirms was fine with WS_FTP, and it's the only free host I've ever had personal experience with (*sigh* - as an aside, anyone got any bright ideas about getting the realtor whose site is hosted there to allow me to get him a REAL host? It's not that he can't afford one....)

Thanks all, As far as i am aware there is no ftp at all, it's just a case of filling in online templates, but i was hoping there was a toll that would just spider the site and grab it that way.

Thanks for all replys.

You can always use your browser. Depending on flavor "Save as...complete web page" or similar wording.

Sounds like a job for the utility "wget". Try:

wget -r [example.com...]

from a command prompt (use with care!)

You get wget as standard on most Linux installations, and there is a version available for Windows too which works just as well.

With this one and wget etc be carefull how you set them up ( how many levels youll let them go to ) otherwise you can find yourself trying to down load the entire internet!

I did hear a wonderfull "sketch" on this one day on BBC radio 4 .....where some one did "this" and had call from AOL to ask if they could possibly put it back ..!
