New to this stuff - hope you can help! Before I begin, I think it's important to note I'm using an Apple Mac!
Having bought some web space and registered my domain name I needed to get a site designed.
I was advised to download HyperEdit and teach myself (X)HTML which I have done with the help of an excellent Elizabeth Castro book (Visual Quickstart Guide). Now I want to upload the page I've developed whilst I complete designing the site. I have tried a program called Fugu but it seems overly complicated.
Is there anything I can use (preferably cheap / free to download - not dreamweaver!) which does the XHTML / CSS bit that HyperEdit does FTP as well?
Any help would be much appreciated!
You can actualy use ftp through your web browser, if you go to ftp.example.com (where example is your domain) it should open up your site within ftp. You will need to know your username and password for your webspace. You can then drag and drop fron your computer into the web space.
I am sorry I dont know any good FTP software for the Mac, so hopfuly someone else will be able to offer some advice on that.
Mack.
have a look here [webmasterworld.com]
there is bags of info on the best FTP client to suite your needs.
A couple of Mac users in the discussion too :)
//chmod 777//
If you are using Mac OS X 10.3 you can connect to your ftp server directly in the OS by going to the "Go" menu and selecting "Connect to server..." In the address line, type "ftp://" then the ftp address of your server. For example, "ftp://ftp.mydomain.com/"
It will prompt for username and password then mount the server on your desktop just like it was a network file server. :)
OMG... 10 years of using the web and I never even knew you could do this! Dragging and dropping files from desktop to web browser. How cool is that?
*gentle laughter* Welcome to the world of "I knew that - where were YOU?", ronin.
Wish I had a dollar for every time something similar to this has happened to me!
