I want to add some short videos to my website. I am currently using Front Page and the movies are .mov files. I believe FP only lets you use either .ra, .ram, .avi. and .asf. Can I change my current files to one of these.

Also, I can't see these files in Windows Media Player...I just hear the audio. I can see and here it in Real One though. I believe FP wants them viewable in Wind. Media Player. This may be the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Just link to the files in FP. It's up to your viewer's individual settings as to what player they will use to open the file. FP has absolutely nothing to do with what player is used unless you are embedding the file in a page and specifying the player there.

If .mov files are opening in your Real player, then the Real player must have been given permission to act as the default player for that type of file. Also, .mov files are generally indicative of QuickTime files. Windows Media Player needs some codecs to play them properly if I'm not mistaken.

.mov files ARE Quicktime files
here is a link to nice page at Apple regarding embedding QT files in a page:

Should I convert the .mov files to something else, like .avi or .wmv files. If so, how do I do so.

you need to run your .mov files through an encoder to compress the file for streaming. I regularly work with Real Networks technology (produces the .rm and .ra files) and downloaded a free production tool called RealProducer to get the job done.

I can't imagine that Microsoft wouldn't have the same kind of production tool available at their Windows player web site with tutorials and instructions about how to do it.

.mov files are better suited to broadband. the average file is from 400K - 2mgs, whereas a Real or Windows streaming file is between 50K - 200K. more suitable for modem connections.

I checked out download.com and got a converter from .mov to avi. It worked real well and was easy to use. I was thinking, maybe I should have it so when people click on it they view it in their movie player (WMV or Real). Instead I was planning to have it viewable on the site itself. What would be better? and how do I make it viewable from their movie viewer?

if you have two LINKS, say:
yourwebsite.com/movie.wmv
and
yourwebsite.com/movie.mov

when a visitor clicks on either link their version of whatever default player they have configured for that file format will play the file.
