photoshop elements 1.0 & making layers transparent
I can't understand the instructions.

Can anybody help me figure out how to make a layer background transparent in PE 1.0? I'm just not good in following their "help".

You should just be able to either delete the background layer to make it transparent. All layers except the background layer start out as transparent. If you have an area you need to make transparent on a layer, just erase the area.
The thing to keep it transparent is to save it "Save for Web" as a gif and check the transparency box in the settings.
The transparent part will appear as checker board.
