Newb question on apache server on personal pc and .htaccess

.htaccess help requested

Hi I installed php and apache on my personal pc so I can do some web development and testing.
I just surfed to my ip address from outside and just saw that the directories were totally open and free for browsing.
I was told I need to make an .htaccess file.

Can anyone shed some light my way as to what it should look like? I would like to disallow anyone to access my pc from my ip unless I have given them a password for the development site I am trying to make.
