CSS, layers - background image slicing

How do I use a sliced bkgnd image with layers ontop

Hi,
A few quick questions, I seem to be confusing myself the more I try to figure out where I am trying to get to.
I am new to designing with layers and image slicing.

I am looking to use a sliced image (for quicker loading reasons -made in fireworks, site built in dreamweaver.)
as the background and then place a layer over the top of it for a main text box. CSS controls the page.

This site is only using one HUGE sliced background image, including the main text box. No layers have been used yet.

I get confused when I try to figure out how, that a sliced image is insterted as fireworks html inside a table, and using layers over top. Can I do that?

If I cant - How can I insert a background image (not sliced )without taking to much loading time. but then..I fiugre I need the slicing in order to use the rolloever features of the menu built in fireworks.

I am confusing me self. And if you dont any of the above - sorry! It's hard for me to explain without sounding like an idiot.

I believe you can set an image as a background property in each individual cell. I guess you would just use the slices as the backgrounds and then just use text as you normally would and you will get the layered effect.

How about using actual layers? within dreamweaver. How can I use those and not confuse myself any more? :)
