Connecting a laptop to the internet via cellphone

Hi

I am based in Spain and am having a problem getting a simple answer to what I thought was a straightforward question.

From time to time I need to connect to the internet on my laptop when I don't have access to a regular phone line. I assumed that buying a quality mobile phone with the ability to plug in a data cable and/or be able to use an infrared connection would do the trick.

Whichever phone shop I go to I am told that this can't be done. Surely they're all wrong? I recently saw someone working at his laptop on a campsite using infrared.

If the cellphone/laptop connection is, in fact, as straightforward as I am assuming could someone please recommend which phone I should consider.

The closest any shop assistant came was suggesting GPRS whilst telling me it was excessively expensive.

I use bluetooth, and with GPRS you are already connected :)
