From your Dreamweaver/Coldfusion/Frontpage editing to your eloquent email writing to presentation copy, what thesaurus do you use to improve/differentiate your wording?

Just the inherent ones in the programs such as Word or are there great third party ones?

dictionary.com has always been useful to me. Not sure how it compares to software you pay for, but there are so many free choices out there, you're bound to find something you like AND one that does the trick.

*sigh* For some things, you simply can't beat the original: Roget's Thesaurus.... in hardback or paper.... really has more entries with greater quality than anything I've tried online.

Merriam-Webster online thesaurus (m-w.com) and dictionary.com

They usually offer different sets of re****s.

I had used Rodale's "Word Finder" for a long time, but had to retire my copy after it became a bit too thumbworn. 'Upgraded' about ten years ago to Rodale's "The Synonym Finder". Don't know what I would do without it.

I use the Rogets on www.bartleby.com (my most used reference site, everything from Dict. of cultural literacy to Mencken's usage, Emily post, famous quotes etc) not sure how it compares to the hard copy, site says it's the 95 version...

The three reference books that never leave my desk are Webster's Dictionary, Roget's Desk Thesaurus, and Strunk and White's Elements of Style. The last one is short, and I just about have it memorized, but I'm still working on the first two.

I'm sure you can find all that stuff online, but your carpal tunnels will thank you if you take your hands off the keyboard every once in awhile =)

Why was "results" converted to "re****s" in my last post in this thread?

Strange! Is r-e-s-u-l-t-s a bad word around here?

Strange! Is r-e-s-u-l-t-s a bad word around here?

Could there have been a typo, placing the L before the U?

I have always found this site to be pretty useful. Much more than just rhymes.

My desktop copy of Roget's is indispensible. I've tried using online thesauruses (thesauri?) but it isn't the same. And since I'm a copywriter, I have a couple other books I use constantly. One is "Words that Sell" by Richard Bayan; the other is "Phrases that Sell" by Werz and Germain.

There's something about a real book in hand....

I'm a writer. I get PAID for doing same. Believe me, if online was better, I'd be using it. For me, a book in hand is worth TEN THOUSAND of same on-screen.

[This is obviously a personal opinion only; your mileage may and quite probably will vary....]

Added:

Passed the test, it's just a transposition of two letters (s-u-l vs. s-l-u) and it looks like it's OK. Gotta watch those typos.:)

I've been playing around with visualthesaurus.com lately which is quite fun. I particularly like the various related-verb meanings it gives you down the right hand side - can set you off on a whole new tangent.
