1) Long sales letters with testimonials?
2) Short, to the point pages?
3) Direct to the Sale pages?
Which works best and why?
I'm working on an article for this, so I'll quote the most interesting responses with links :)

IMO, a lot depends on the nature of the product/service and how specific the landing page is. For example, if I have an auto parts catalog, I'm probably going to have to offer various navigation and searching options. If I have a landing page for a specific brand of parts, of course, I can offer more specific choices.
There are plenty of single-product sites, though, that can launch directly into the sales pitch on the landing page.
Affiliate sites have different objectives - they may want to offer attractive and relevant links that will take the visitor off the site immediately.
