Very good article! Bookmarked.

But...

An unfortunate pattern the dialogue in "Three Junes, by the way, is that all the male characters begin to sound like the author's version of Noel Coward - fey, acerbic, witty, superior, puckish, diffident. Pretty soon the credibility of the entire novel is shot. You owe it to each character's unique nature to make every one of them an original.

He forgot to edit his work. Just having fun ;)

He missed what I have at the top of my list.

Know what you want to say before you site down to write.

Before you realize it, you'll sit down to write about something without having a good idea of what you want to say. Essay syndrome ensues.

Essay Syndrome - A particular style of writing that emerges when the writer doesn't have a personal opinion on the subject matter. Rather than convey a message or view, the writer simply relays facts.

Good article. A word processor only goes so far. The crutch words in our case could probably be seen as keywords in some cases.

Great point, Oaf... SEO writing often violates this rule. In normal writing, one often tries to find as many different ways to say the same thing as possible to avoid repetition. Of course, Google 8.0 will probably recognize synonymous phrases and give us more stylistic freedom.

Commas

The most misunderstood and misused punctuation mark in sentance structure. Why can't people use commas correctly?

Why can't people use commas correctly?
I'd say part of the explanation for this is that the use of commas can be optional or nuanced. I agree that you see a lot of writing on the web that clearly violates "rules" for comma use, but as that article suggests
... most modifying clauses and many phrases *require* commas. You may find it necessary to break the rules from time to time, ...

Because I was never good in English - Spelling and Grammar - only subjects in school I ever had a hard time with. :)

Some of us just dont get it, or care, or really try to understand it all *guilty of this one*

It bites me now and then, but life goes on.
