Found Website Copying 1000s of Pages

Holy Page Jacking - what do you do?

Through Google Alert, I found a page that copied my home page content and then was redirecting the page to an affiliate site. Boy, was I steamed.

I started to write a cease & desist letter, but then I looked at his website some more. He has literally thousands of pages copied from all over the web doing this - including a ton from various Better Business Bureau offices! So, now the problem is bigger than just me and I really have no way of knowing if he only copied one page of mine.

To add to this, he's the creator of some pretty well known Internet marketing-type software.

I think my little ol' cease and desist letter will not make much difference, other than him removing my own content.

These pages are being indexed by Google, so I thought of reporting it there. But all these copied pages actually link to the owner of the page he copied from...do we get associated with this "bad neighbourhood" for reporting him? Plus, having him removed from Google doesn't solve the problem of copyright infringement.

I suppose I could be pro-active and write to some of the others who have been copied. I have actually already contacted one and I'll see what he has to say.

Anyone have any advice or dealt with such a situation?

wow thats interesting. would you mind sticky'ing me with the url?

i would continue the c&d letter if i were you.. one in one or one in a million, yours is still important. you also have the option of cc'ing the other owners you can recognize.

This site is probably created by a spammer who won't respond to C&D letters (though it won't hurt to send one) - I'd probably start working the ISP angle and/or search engine angle too...

If you find a deep-pockets firm who is being ripped off, be sure to let them know. They'll be more likely to devote some resources to shutting the site down.

I too have been copied by a plagiarist who has many hundred pages that could be copied from others. I have alerted one of those sites and have faxed a DMCA notification to Google.

Within 7 days of my DMCA notification, the copied URL has been removed from the SERP by Google.
