For all the writers out there, this is a handy toolbar. Dictionary and thesaurus options for buttons, and word of the day. :)

They give you the option to open the query page in a new window or the same window. There's a conflict if you have the Google toolbar with popup blocker installed and opt for the Dictionary.com toolbar to open queries in a new window.

Dictionary.com Toolbar [dictionary.reference.com]

Thank you. That is going to be a well-used tool. Always find it difficult in my limited space to juggle all the reference materials I use.

Hmmm. A thesaurus search returns No entry found for webmaster.

The suggestion: Did you mean bemused?

Oftentimes, yes.

After installing we'll have to switch between Google toolbar & Dictionary toolbar.
Why not use google toolbar & then click on the word link to see the meaning of the word ( provided by dictionary.com also ) either way it will be bemusing :)

Talking about toolbars, I use Opera & you know the list of searches can be done via the drop down box conveniently
you'll have to edit the search.ini in the profile folder.
But I'm not able to add the Dictionary search inside it - it just stops at item 12 which Hotbot - hope some one would know how to add that it in there.

I'm no writer though - I type now a days - on a keyboard :)

I don't think that's the right ini file operafan. It looks like the right click one but I'm damned if I can find the correct one...

Why not - I edited this one quite some time ago & all listed works just fine except for dictionary - however when I added it to my friends search ini - it didnt change.
But to edit that search list I remembered it was that search.ini file to edit?

Well, when I pull the drop-down menu it shows way more than 12 entries. So I assume somthing else takes care of that?

No, it doesn't show. I mean that the dropdown has more than 12 entries so I think it can't be thr right file....

I'm sorry, I really havn't explored that area till now ;-)

i'm still trying to understand why it wouldnt show more than 12 & beyond... maybe when you manage to find out why, you can tell me.
i think this thread has been diluted :) . But all in the context of writing/typing anyway.. :)

You can get some great Opera hotlist panel dictionaries at [my.opera.com ]

I like the LookWAYup one.

operafan,

Yes, search.ini is the file to modify. But you need to assign a key to every search engine, otherwise they won't show up.

I'm extremely reluctant to add toolbars to my browser. I don't know why, but I get very crash-y when I have extra stuff like that on my IE browser.

I usually do similar to what operafan recommends - search for the word in Google and click on the hyperlinked word at the top of the results to get to the dictionary info. This toolbar looks pretty durned cool, though, so I might have to try it.

Hey Hawkgirl. Do try it. I've been using it for, well, a long time. Better than a year anyway.

One of the things I always liked about it is, no matter where the word is you highlight, all you have to do is Ctrl+The Letter "L" (for...are you ready? Look!<Gasp!>) and it always functions flawlessly.

:)

Any key would work, but I guess 'd' would make sense?

>Any key would work, but I guess 'd' would make sense?

I think so.

Having had mine installed for as long as I have, I can't be sure if I used default letters from my original keyboard set-up for 'hotkeys', or if it was the default key selected during D.com set-up.

In Opera if you double-click a word a context menu pops up giving you options to search any of the listed SEs with that word, send it directly to a dictionary or encyclopedia site, and even translate it.

Yet another reason I'm an Opera user.

> double-clicked words

I wonder where you can change that setting? ;)
