Can anyone point me to research or discussions about the optimal width of text columns for readability/compression?

Of course, controlling line length on a web page isn't always easy. Due to browser differences, browser font size settings, screen sizes, etc., your actual line length will usually vary. If you rigidly format the content, then you run the risk of alienating users with different screen resolutions or special visual needs.

You might look for some of the fixed vs. fluid layout discussions if you want to further muddy the line-length waters. ;)
