Just received a request to take a copyrighted routemap offline. The map was taken from a program that was lying around here. The e-mail states that the material was copyrighted and i should contact them to discuss a settlement for the time this material was used.

Because i don't want to pay up for this, i have taken the page offline permanently immediately.

Can i leave it by that, or is it a good idea to contact the copyright-holder to discuss a fee for the time it was used?

I'm from the Netherlands, but i think the copyright law is very similar to, for example, the US or UK

My first inclination would be to stonewall them on the past use issue & just inform them that you were unaware it was copyrighted material and you have removed it. Thank them for calling it to your attention. I can't imagine it would be worth their trouble to pursue you, particularly if you are in another country.

If you want real legal advice, of course, check with your attorney.

I'd also be inclined to take that approach, only if you feel it justifies a response at all. And, if you do respons, do not encourage a reply of any sort.

Well, the company is also Dutch, so would you take the same approach then?

Sure.

The fact they are closer, country-wise, does make it easier to contact you again, unfortunately.
