I'm trying to strike a balance between optimization and valuable user-focused content.

I read Designing a High Search Engine Rankings Page at [searchengineworld.com...] and while it was a great article, I was wondering if its advice is still relevant, since it was first posted in 1997.

Is this still a good strategy? Is there a more recent piece on this issue that's available?

Not a bad place to begin for brainstorming keywords and corallary words. (log files, bonded words)

You may not want to pay that much attention to the meta keyword tag.

For finding the usability aspect of your content, be sure to check out fathom's post in this thread:
[webmasterworld.com...]

There are also some links to further discussions in my post on that thread.

Finding the balance is crucial. If your page is perfectly optimized but looks horrible, you won't be able to keep the traffic that your high rankings bring. But if you have a beautiful site that just isn't optimized at all, people might not be able to find your site to know just how beautiful it is in the first place ;)

It will also depend on how competitive your target market area is. If it is a very competitive term with 8 million results in Google, obviously you will need to take a stronger approach with optimization than you would if your terms only came back with 100,000 results, and none of the top listings are really even that closely related to the subject.
