Spreading the content across 2 domains

Should I spread the content or have it on one domain?

Hi Guys and Gals,

This one has been bugging me for a while and I just can't decide. This is the situation.

I have a domain which offers internet based services to it's customers. Let's say it was a SEO service. I have two types of content. The first type is the sales pitch about the service and the second type is (in the SEO example) articles like 'What is SEO?'

Do you think I should:
1. put both types of content on the site offering the service, thus, building content and covering several search terms and attracting more visitors to the site.

2. seperate the content acoss both sites. If this is the case I would have the service site deep link to the articles on the other site. On the articles site I would have a 'in partnership with ...' logo drive visitors to purchase the service.

What do you think is the best approach? Have I missed a option? Is any of what I have typed clear :)?

In the example you give the answer is absolutley not. The additional info you intend to give is valuable and will add extra value to your site.

I take it that that is a vote for it all to go on one domain then.

Hi chris_f,

I thought doing something similar for my site, some kind of techi-talk section with two possible access:

  • one from the main navigation that link to a page listing all the specific terms listed (like a glossary) and each term (which are keywords also BTW ;) ) is a link and leads to a more specific page with articles, tutorials (may be) and examples, and links to authorities in this field but also to the specific service page we offer.
  • and then on the specific service page a link like techi talk on [link]website design[/link] at the end of the description, linking directly to the specific techi talk page.

I haven't started doing it yet because I am not sure how potential customers would percieved it. I've got to put my head around what exactly I will put (may be not the tutorials :) ).

Regarding your specific question, why not having both (will be all benefical - except for the extra work load :) ):

  • build on a separate domain a good site with great in depth articles, examples, tutorials (here we go ;) )..., advertising this site to tutorials website, IT websites and so on and forth (built PR), and deep link to your web design agency site.
  • on your website agency site having less indepth articles (but still very good ones) and NOT linking back to the other domain.
